“Out patient antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) services provide intravenous treatments for patients in the community who would otherwise be admitted to hospital. However, from the authors’ experience, vascular access is not always considered a priority when commissioning OPAT services.
Mastercall Healthcare is a social enterprise provider of NHS urgent care services and currently provides OPAT for three clinical commissioning groups across Greater Manchester. None of these OPAT services have vascular access provision as part of the service specification, with patients having to be referred back to the local acute trust for placement of a central line under anaesthetic.”
