Abstract:

Arterial puncture for blood gas analysis is a procedure often performed in the emergency department (ED). However, it has its drawbacks: it is painful, it is not possible to successfully obtain a sample in all patients, and severe complications have been described. The use of ultrasonography to guide arterial puncture could potentially minimize some of these drawbacks. In a previous randomized clinical trial, ultrasonographically guided arterial puncture for blood gas analysis did not seem superior to the conventional technique using anatomic landmarks.
