Abstract:
Guidelines for the prevention of central venous catheter (CVC) infections recommend disinfection of the hub before access [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. In many German hospitals, stopcocks are used without needle-free connectors (NFCs) because the KRINKO (Commission for Hygiene and Infection Prevention in Healthcare at the Robert Koch Institute) CVC guidelines do not recommend the use of NFCs, instead recommending spray disinfection of the Luer hub before access [ 4 ]. As compliance with disinfection of female Luer hubs is poor, antiseptic barrier caps (Curos; 3M, St Paul, MN, USA) containing an alcohol pad have been developed; these need to be changed after hub access in the absence of additional disinfection [ 5 , 6 ]. To our knowledge, this is the first study to assess Luer hubs on stopcocks without the use of NFCs.
