IV Summit 23 from IVTEAM

Once again IVTEAM are bringing together clinical, education, research and manufacturing resources to form the IV Summit 23 from IVTEAM. Whether our speakers are academics with an eye on the future, manufacturers with a foot in both camps or clinicians with a focus on the clinical work of today, our agenda ensures it has relevant content for all delegates.

The day will be chaired by Peter Carr, Associated Professor at SONM at University of Galway. Peter brings an international flavour to the day. However, it is his knowledge, skill and experience of vascular access that makes him an ideal chairperson. On a personal note, I am immensely grateful to Peter for taking on this role as it gives me the freedom to mingle during the day.

The agenda itself is a varied mix of research, experience and knowledge; designed in such a way as to mirror the eclectic world of vascular access and infusion therapy. Agenda topics include:

  • Extravasation – Samantha Thomas from NHS Resolution discusses what we can learn from extravasation claims. Her talk will include information from the NHS Resolution ‘Did you know’ leaflet on extravasation injury claims in November 2022 which examined 444 claims of which 197 were settled at a total cost of £15.6 million. This presentation will explore the findings and recommendations.
  • Vascular Access Teams – We have two speakers discussing vascular access teams. Phoebe Curson-Endicott, IV Access Team Leader Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital describes her personal journey to become IV access team leader and Jess Green, Matron and IV Lead at The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust describes what different groups expect from vascular access teams and how to deliver on these varied and often competing needs.
  • Peripheral IV care standards – Danel Meno, Educational Lead Nurse for Infection & Prevention Control at Whittington Health will provide an insight into using QI methodology to uncover key problems with the maintenance of vascular devices and develop practical solutions to improve practice.
  • Gloves – Jennie Wilson, Professor at University of West London will explore the misassumptions about the role of gloves, how they contribute to transmission of infection and generate unnecessary costs. Jennie will present evidence for how healthcare worker attitudes to glove use impact on their practice and propose strategies for changing glove-use behaviour that will protect patient and staff and reduce the impact on the environment.
  • Trialling new products – In this session, Graham Howard, Vascular Access Lead Nurse East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, will discuss his procurement journey and how they have trialled different VADs and dressings within his organisation, things to consider, and what to expect in the process of VHP quality improvement.
  • Blood culture contamination – A multi profession group consisting of Adele Quinn, Anthony Starr and Peter Burkhart from University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS FT will provide an introduction to the use of Hexiprep wipes to reduce blood contamination rates within UHMBT and a review of blood culture packs.

You can view the full agenda here.

Also, delegates who attend will have a chance to receive the IVTEAM education grant to attend the 8th WoCoVA (World Congress on Vascular Access) in Prague 17th – 19th April 2024.*

Did we also mention that you will be fed!

At Nottingham Trent University City Campus you will find a comfortable, contained learning and networking space. The venue is in Nottingham city centre with a number of hotels within walking distance of the venue. Also, Nottingham has excellent transport links; bus, tram and car parking are available close to the venue. If travelling by train, the venue is a fifteen minute walk from the station.

Thank you for your interest in the IV Summit 23 from IVTEAM. We look forward to receiving your registration details.

* To be eligible for the IVTEAM education grant delegates must be in the room when the grant is awarded. The grant will consist of a single registration to WoCoVA paid by IVTEAM and a cash component to help with travel and accommodation. The grant will be awarded randomly to one of the attending delegates. If the grant is not awarded on the first draw (e.g. grant refused or person not in room) the team will continue to randomly announce potential recipients until the grant is awarded.
