Numerous guidelines have been published by consensus groups worldwide regarding optimal skin antisepsis prior to surgical incision or insertion of intravascular catheters [1–3]. However, in the opinion of the authors, current guidelines fail to address a key element: the method of application of the antiseptic agent.
