“We conducted a three-month survey in a general medical ward to detect the rates of mechanical and inflammatory complications associated with the use of traditional PIVCs. The results showed that 211 (59%) out of 365 monitored devices were replaced due to phlebitis (28%), dislocation (19%) or obstruction (12%). The overall mechanical complication rate was 133 per 1000 catheter-days. PIVCs complicated by phlebitis had a mean indwelling time of 3.8 [standard deviation (SD) 2.7]days, and were placed after a mean of 3.8 (SD 2.1) previous devices”
