Abstract:
As more patients live longer while receiving hemodialysis, maintaining permanent hemodialysis vascular access (VA) is increasingly challenging as they ultimately exhaust their conventional upper extremity options. The National Kidney Foundation Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative guidelines suggest femoral arteriovenous fistula over chest wall grafts. The results of femoral VA are reported elsewhere and describe higher rates of wound complications,1,2 graft infection,1,2 reinterventions,3 and ischemic complications.
