Abstract:

The public health (PH) impact of microbial colonization and biofilm formation on medical devices has received considerable attention over the last decade. According to a 2002 National Institutes of Health interdisciplinary grants program announcement, which was geared at funding research programs to help reduce the incidence of health care–associated infections (HAIs), biofilms research is critical because 80% of all human infections are attributable to microbes in biofilms, and a better understanding of the genetic, biochemical, and pathophysiologic attributes of biofilm-associated microbes is necessary to help develop effective countermeasures.
