PICC tip position statement

Intravenous news: The Infusion Nurses Society (INS) convened a national task force of infusion therapy experts to examine the practice of RNs determining the distal tip placement of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) by chest radiograph. The task force examined current practices, reviewed current literature, and conducted surveys of several state boards of nursing.

After much discussion and analysis, it is the position of INS that a qualified registered nurse may determine the distal tip location of peripherally inserted central catheters by initial or repeat chest radiograph studies prior to administration of the prescribed therapy.
