Peter Pronovost talks about improving patient safety doctor by doctor


Medpagetoday report “Preventable harm is the third leading cause of death in U.S. hospitals, but physicians have the ability to change this, if they believe they can. That is the message Peter Pronovost, MD, PhD, director of the Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality at Johns Hopkins Health System, delivered in a keynote address at the Hospital Medicine meeting here.

To illustrate his message, Pronovost cited the example of Sir Roger Bannister, an academic physician and athlete who wanted to break the 4-minute mile. Scientists told Bannister it was physiologically impossible, but Bannister did it anyway.
