Abstract:

The Infusion Therapy Team (ITT) in a large comprehensive oncology center is responsible for managing all vascular access devices (VADs). For three decades, the VAD management was implemented using a medically approved “standing orders” protocol which automatically allowed ITT registered nurses to carry out interventions immediately. Due to safety and regulatory compliance, the use of a “standing orders” protocol was prohibited. This issue led to the process of obtaining physician orders and awaiting responses for procedures needed.
