Abstract:
Each year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that more than 722,000 hospitalized patients contract a health care-associated infection, resulting in more than 72,000 deaths. In September 2013, the CDC released new evidence of emergent antimicrobial resistance threats and categorized them by urgency. According to the new report, at least 2 million people become infected with bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics and at least 23,000 people die each year as a direct result of these infections.
