Standards for infusion therapy

The RCN report “The Royal College of Nursing has published expanded and updated standards for infusion therapy. The third edition of the standards builds on existing guidance aimed at decreasing the risks associated with infusion. The standards deal with all aspects of the therapy, ranging from products and documentation, infusion equipment and site selection and care.

The standards are provided as statements that can be readily incorporated into local infusion-related policies and procedures, performance improvement programmes, evaluations and educational approaches. Practical guidance on how to implement the standards is also given.

Unlike many guidelines, the publication provides clear practical answers to many of the questions which health care workers raise when faced with a list of standards to apply. The document is likely to prove valuable to all health care staff involved in infusion therapy. Each of the standard statements has been extensively peer reviewed with supportive literature where available.”
