“In pediatric cardiac surgery, selection of the optimal size and position of a percutaneously placed central venous catheter (CVC) is critically important. Implications for both size and localization include ensuring reliable drug delivery, generating reproducible hemodynamic data to guide resuscitation, and ensuring patient safety during line placement. CVCs are used on a near-universal basis in cardiac surgery as a method for measuring central venous pressure to guide volume administration while also providing a safe and reliable delivery site for inotropic, vasoactive, and anesthetic medications in addition to blood products”.
