Intravenous line usage outside the ICU

Intravenous literature: Wilkinson-Houston, K.N., Reeves, T. and Zuckerman, J. (2011) Beyond Critical Care: Reducing CABSI on Medical-Surgical and Long Term Care Units. AJIC: American Journal of Infection Control. 39(5), p.E56-E57.

Initial efforts to reduce CABSI at our >500 bed urban teaching hospital focused on CVC insertion practices & education of medical staff in the ICU. During 2008-2010, >70% of central line usage occurred outside the ICU with peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) & hemodialysis catheters (HDC) as the most commonly used catheters.
