Abstract:
PURPOSE: This case illustrates a rare complication of a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC). PICCs are associated with a significantly increased risk of upper extremity deep vein thrombosis; however, there are currently no case reports of isolated thrombosis of the azygos vein secondary to a PICC.
CONCLUSIONS: With the well-documented increase in the use of PICCs for venous access we remind clinicians to consider this rare complication.
