vCJD in blood recipients

Intravenous news: Department of Health report “This paper was prepared for the CJD Incidents Panel, which provides advice on incidents in which any form of CJD might have been transmitted from person to person. In this instance, two recipients of blood developed vCJD, and there was some possibility that these individuals had a donor in common. This raised the question of whether the cases might have been caused by receipt of blood, with the donor being the common source of infection. The paper analyses how likely this would have been. In this particular case, the available evidence suggested that there was only a small chance of the two recipients having received blood from the same donor. Although blood-borne transmission of vCJD could not be ruled out, the analysis therefore shows that the two cases are more likely to be coincidental, and caused by dietary exposure to BSE.”
