TPN infection reduction
Intravenous news: IMN.ie report ” The introduction of a dedicated total parenteral nutrition (TPN) surveillance clinical nurse manager (CNM) has saved the Mater Hospital, Dublin, at least €78,300 per annum and led to a significant decrease in catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI) in TPN patients. The Mater in 1997 promoted an intravenous nutrition nurse to surveillance CNM for TPN, a recognised risk factor for CRBSI, following an increase in the incidence of infections over a three-year period, and quarterly infection audit meetings were introduced to monitor CRBSI trends. This role involved promoting the use of guidelines for central venous catheter (CVC) insertion and care; and daily visits to the wards with ongoing education and data collection.”
