Prescribing blood by nurses

The RCN Blood Transfusion Nursing Forum have reported on the prescription of blood by nurses. The report that “A briefing paper has been issued to provide the latest information on a collaborative project between NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) and the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service (SNBTS) to investigate the feasibility of nurses prescribing blood”.

The continue “The legal situation has been clarified and there are no legal barriers to appropriately trained, competent registered practitioners, such as nurses, ordering, authorising and administering blood”.

A multidisciplinary consultation group are to meet to develop a framework on how nurses may prescribe blood. A workshop to discuss how to take this forward will take place on Friday, 17th October at the NBS Donor Centre, 65 New Street, Birmingham.
