Prefillable medical syringe
Medical technology company Becton Dickinson (BD) is preparing to launch trial production runs at a new €100m syringe manufacturing plant just constructed in Tatabánya, Hungary. The facility, located 60km from Budapest, is to manufacture prefillable medical syringes. Pharmaceutical companies will supply the syringes ready filled with a measure of an injectable drug, so reducing the potential for medication error and contamination, explained US-based BD. Demand for this type of syringe is growing strongly worldwide.
BD broke ground at the Tatabanya Industrial Park at the end of September 2008. The group has maintained the project’s original timetable despite the onset of the global recession.
The plant, due to begin full commercial production in January next year, is expected to employ a workforce of up to 500 over the next five years. During that time the operation will grow to cover an area of 25,000m2. BD selected the Hungarian site because of its close proximity to the main European syringe markets.
