Colin Norris was today told that he would serve a minimum of thirty years in jail after being found guilty of killing four patients in his care. Other cases include that of serial killers Harold Shipman and Charles Cullen.This post may have an emotive title. But as a nurse you are in a position of trust. When that trust is abused and patients are purposefully harmed it is well worth pondering on how this impacts upon the care we administer routinely on a daily basis. For example, I was asked just the other day to explain exactly what I was injecting as a flushed a cannula just after insertion! When news stories about ‘killer nurses’ hits the front front page our patients may start to get a little nervous!
