Intravenous news: The Shelby County Reporter report “Nineteen patients at six Birmingham-area hospitals, including Shelby Baptist Medical Center in Alabaster, were allegedly contaminated with a potentially deadly bacteria after they were exposed to contaminated intravenous supplements, said a nurse with the Alabama Department of Public Health.

A total of nine patients died among the six hospitals, which include Baptist Princeton, Shelby Baptist, Baptist Prattville, Medical West, Cooper Green Mercy and Select Specialty Hospital, said ADPH nurse Mary McIntyre.

McIntyre was unable to confirm if any of the nine deaths occurred at Shelby Baptist. The potentially contaminated intravenous materials may have come from the Birmingham-based Meds IV pharmacy.
