Staff at Little Company of Mary Hospital in Torrance have installed a new computer system they hope makes human error less likely.

The $2.5 million system includes three components: so-called smart pumps that don’t allow nurses to program the wrong dosage in intravenous machines; a bulky robot like machine that dispenses common drugs in the pharmacy with minimal human handling; and a new bar-coding system that they hope will prevent prescription mistakes.
