Intravenous news: Medpage Today report “More than 100 people – including doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals – have been charged with falsely billing Medicare for a total of $452 million in the biggest single fraud bust to date. Strike teams arrested 107 healthcare workers in seven cities for alleged Medicare fraud, Attorney General Eric Holder and Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced Wednesday.
Charges included submitting claims to Medicare for treatments that were medically unnecessary or never provided, violations of the anti-kickback statutes, and money laundering. HHS also took administrative action, including suspension, against 52 other healthcare providers for suspected fraud. Schemes involved home health care, mental health services, psychotherapy, physical and occupational therapy, durable medical equipment (DME) and ambulance services.
