Intravenous news: Following the success of the first distant learning advanced vascular access module the University of West of Scotland are running the module again in January 2012. The module, which is delivered via distance learning, will provide practitioners with the essential knowledge and skills required for safe and effective vascular access device placement.
The 20-week programme aims to produce healthcare practitioners who can engage in innovative and creative thinking and apply principles of best practice to enhance the care of patients requiring intravenous (IV) therapy. Students of this module will be equipped with the skills to recogonise and respond to potential complications associated with IV access.
As well as potentially enhancing career progression, practitioners who successfully complete this programme, which is 20 points at SCQF level 11, may proceed to undertake further study at Masters level, ultimately achieving a Masters Degree relevant to their specific profession.

- Clinical leadership: development and leadership of practitioner services
- Anatomy and physiology related to vascular access
- Physiology of blood flow
- Vascular access device selection
- Microbiology and infection control
- Audit and research
- Focused patient assessment
- Insertion complications
- X-ray interpretation for central venous catheter (CVC) tip placement
- Electrocardiogram (ECG) recognition in relation to device placement
- Ultrasound principles (physics and techniques)
- Techniques of peripherally inserted central catheter, tunnelled cuffed central venous catheters and totally implanted central venous catheters
- Emerging technologies for vascular access
- Patient involvement in their care
Applicants will normally posses a first degree and are required to be employed in a clinical area that facilitates achievement of specific work-based competencies, such as vascular access services, IV teams, renal medicine and interventional radiology. Applicants, who will normally have employer support to undertake this programme, should also have a minimum of five years post-registration experience. Those applying to the programme must ensure they identify a mentor/supervisor available and willing to support them achieve competencies. Applicants may also be considered with other academic, vocational or professional qualifications deemed to be equivalent.
