1st of 2 articles reporting progress on protecting healthcare workers from needlestick injuries which result in HIV or hepatitis infections, focusing on the EU Directive (2010/32/EU). The guidance, based on a hierarchy of controls risk strategy, is summarised and the use of follow-up testing and post-exposure prophylaxis is discussed. A case where a trust was prosecuted for needlestick injuries is included.
