Intravenous literature: Scales, K. (2010) Central venous access devices: Part 2 For intermediate and long-term use. British Journal of Nursing. 19(5), Supp: S20 – S25.
This is the second of a two-part article that provides an overview of central venous access devices (CVADs) in clinical practice. Part 1 (Scales, 2010) focused on CVADs for acute care and presented an algorithm for device selection. The procedure for insertion and removal of non-tunnelled central catheters was described, highlighting the infection control recommendations from epic2. Part 2 reviews the selection of CVADs for intermediate and long-term use. The procedure for insertion of peripherally inserted central catheters is described, again highlighting the infection control recommendations from epic2. The care and management of CVADs for intermediate and long-term use is also discussed.
