Intravenous literature: O’Rourke, E., Arentzen, J., Iacobacci, M. and Livornese, L. (2011) Expansion of Bundle to Eliminate Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infections in Critical Care. AJIC: American Journal of Infection Control. 39(5), p.E52-E53.
An estimated 250,000 cases of Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infections (CLABSIs) occur in United States hospitals each year, with an attributable mortality of 12-25% for each infection. Critical care patients are at increased risk for infection due to underlying illness and immunosuppression. The Central Line (CL) bundle was implemented in our Critical Care units to reduce CLABSI incidence but additional interventions were instituted to improve patient outcomes.
