Intravenous conference: TargetBSI report “In April 2011, the Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC) released updated evidenced-based guidelines for preventing intravascular catheter-related infections. However, the dissemination of infection prevention recommendations does not necessarily lead to changes in bedside practice. How do we ensure that these evidence-based practices are implemented in our healthcare organization? How do we promote change?

Intravenous conference: VAM report “With an estimated 7 million central venous catheters placed per year and hundreds of millions of needleless connectors used with those catheters, a clear understanding is needed on the impact of these connectors on the incidence of occlusion. Catheter occlusion is the most common non-infectious complication associated with the use of venous access devices, occurring in as much as 33% of central venous catheters.

Changes in technology have resulted in movement away from needle-based injection sites to needleless connectors creating a need for additional education on reflux caused by physiological and mechanical actions of the body and the connectors. Blood reflux back into the catheter establishes an environment promoting thrombus formation leading to partial and total occlusions of the catheter. This presentation focuses on an in vitro study demonstrating the result of differing amounts of reflux found in some neutral and negative displacement connectors. Emphasis is placed on impact of occlusion related to cost and potential infections with considerations for solutions.”

A Special Webinar Event for VAM, in collaboration with Baxter featuring an Extended Question and Answer Panel.

Speaker: Nancy L. Moureau, BSN, RN, CRNI, CPUI, VA-BC

Panelist: Lorelle Wuerz, BS, RN, MSN, VA-BC

Moderator/Panelist: Deb Richardson, MS, RN, CNS

Following the webinar, the participants will be able to:

Evaluate the impact of needleless connectors on incidence of thrombosis and occlusion

Discuss in vitro study that demonstrates how technology changes impact occlusion

Determine solutions to reduce cost and incidence of thrombotic occlusions with central venous catheters.
